I was not part of Wrimuzart

At rhyme I am not smart,

But I need to tell about a kid

Who lives inside my heart;

Don’t know how long he’ll be there,

Memory … tis a fickle thing,

But I try to see him often,

Even if details are not plain.

This kid, we’ll call him Johnny…

is on Ferndale heading for Harding Hall,

He sees his best friend …“Digger”,

who stops when the kid gives a call.

Quick they are in the locker room

Looks like the whole gang is there,

“Grab that Physics book,

I don’t think old Bobby will care.”

Wait, someone needs a hymn

The “devo” must begin somehow,

So the kid opens up his mouth and

it’s “Lord we come before Thee Now”.

In math Travis goes to the board,

glad Miss Gaither didn’t call on me”,

In speech, Joy ask for extemporaneous,

“That’s OK ….maybe better than a “C”?

Now it’s time for chapel

Up the back stairs we trod.

Sitting in rows alphabetical,

and trying not to nod.

Sit kid… between Linda and Duncan

and there’s Sara Ann right near,

I don’t think the kid is paying attention

Oh, it’s Jimmy Welch flipping his ear.

“No WL, no time for lunch at Melrose

…the snooker will have to wait.”

“Besides, for the ballgame tonight

I want to see if I can get a date”.

So now it’s off to English,

Diagram a sentence for a while,

But if Naomi will pass this note …

then .. if ... Barbara will just smile …

Would Mr. Melton allow his daughter?

to Joe’s…after the game…would he care?

And Johnny is holding his breath …

But then … her smile is there.

The afternoon goes quickly,

No cats in a drawer today,

No BB’s nor a shot putt, but Selly

 pealed”… left rubber some say.

The kid is not on the varsity,

His glasses are way too thick,

But he will be at the ballgame

His letter jacket will look real slick.

There is Doris leading cheers,

Ann Brian and Sandra too,

All around are the Mustangs

including most of you!

Darrell is pretty hot tonight …

and Cundall has made a score,

at the buzzer Ryan wins by one,

n’ Tommy is chasing balls all over the floor.

“We’re from Lipscomb,

we couldn’t be prouder…

Can’t hear us know,

 we’ll yell a little louder!”

The green Plymouth backs in at Joes

Jimmy comes over with a smile,

“Guess we’ll order the usual”,

With WMAK playing all the while.

That kid … Johnny ... had no idea

He was making memories for a life;

Certainly … all the good stuff,

Very little heartache, pain or strife.

I hope that kid stays with me,

Right till my last day is gone;

That way, I’ll take all you with me …

and …. I’ll never be alone.

Let’s plan a big reunion,

Right inside the banquet hall of heaven;

There we’ll thank God for all our friends,

from Lipscomb … class of ’57.
